On April 3rd, 2025, a group of students embarked on our very first school excursion outside the campus. The day started early, with a 7:30 AM departure from Viestikatu 1 and the group headed to visit the Normet factory in Iisalmi. It was an exciting opportunity to see real-world industrial innovation in action.

The Factory visit
The Normet staff showed the product line and the students were all eager to explore the factory. It was exciting to learn more about the cutting-edge technologies used in underground mining, tunneling, and civil engineering. After arriving in time for the 9:00 AM program, we took part in a 2-3 hour tour of the facility, where we learned about the machinery, automation, and systems that keep things running smoothly.
Normet, a leading company in providing equipment and solutions for underground industries, gave us a great look into how they prioritize sustainability and safety while implementing advanced technologies like automation and real-time data analytics. Seeing how these systems are used in practice was a real eye-opener.
After the tour, we enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by Normet. It was a nice chance to relax and chat about everything we had just seen.

For many of us, this was a memorable day. It was our first excursion beyond the school, and it helped connect what we’re learning in our studies with real-world applications. We got to see firsthand how technology plays a major role in industries that we don’t often think about, and it sparked some new ideas about how we can apply our knowledge in the future.
As we headed back to Kuopio, it was clear that this experience had been a valuable one. We’re looking forward to more opportunities like this to explore different industries and see how our learning can translate into the real world.
A big thanks to Normet for hosting us and making this day possible, and to everyone who joined in making it a great experience!
